Collapsing Building

Imagine that you are walking down the street and you witness a building collapse. At first, you might think of the building as a solid, permanent object with a clear form and identity. However, as you watch the building collapse, you start to recognize the concept of emptiness.

The building, in fact, is not a static, permanent object. It is constantly changing and is dependent on various conditions for its existence. Maybe it was poorly constructed or maintained, and the weight of its own structure proved too much. Maybe sudden environmental factors such as an earthquake or hurricane contributed to the collapse. Whatever the reason, the building was unable to withstand certain conditions and therefore its form broke down.

If you were to examine the building more closely, you would find that there is no inherent self-nature or essence to it. It was simply made up of various parts, such as roofing, floors, walls, pillars, and so on, that were put together to create the impression of a solid structure.

This recognition of emptiness can help us understand that all phenomena lack inherent existence and that they are in a constant state of change. By reflecting on the impermanence and interdependence of all phenomena, we can become more aware of the ultimate nature of reality. This understanding can also help us let go of our attachment to fixed views and concepts, and lead us towards greater wisdom, compassion, and freedom.
