Dissolving Pill

Reflecting on emptiness can be done through the example of a dissolving pill. Imagine that you have a pill in your hand that you need to take for a particular ailment. You might think that the pill is a solid object with a clear form and identity. However, as soon as you place the pill in your mouth and swallow it, it begins to dissolve and break down into its constituent parts. The solid form that you initially perceived as the pill quickly disappears and becomes a collection of molecules and atoms that are constantly moving and changing.
Through this example, we can recognize that the pill was never solid, fixed or permanent. It was a collection of parts or phenomena which were dependent on various conditions for their existence. This realization can be applied to all phenomena, including ourselves; we are likewise dependent on various conditions for our existence and are constantly changing. By recognizing and reflecting on the emptiness of all phenomena, we can let go of our attachment to fixed ideas and identities and develop a greater sense of wisdom, compassion and freedom.
